ALIEN MUSTANGS – Alienation 2018 (LP Sound Effect Records)
After a 7 inch in 2013 (“Red Tambourine”), a 10 inch in 2014 (“River”), and a cassette in 2015 (“The Tape Sessions”) what more reasonable from making an LP? So, the time has come and the band from Thessaloniki unleashed their debut album, “Alienation”, through our beloved Greek label Sound Effect Records. The album contains 6 tracks clocking from 3 to 9 minutes long and it takes off with “Holy Motors”, slow hazy n’ fuzzy guitar sounding with torturous vocals under a heavy spacey motive while the references to the legendary Spacemen 3 are more than obvious! But the remarkable point here is that their sound is so fresh and somehow filtered through something that I haven’t figure out yet! The atmosphere becomes more slow, more lazy, more trippy, still electrified with even more torturous vocals (a little 80s-goth-alike) while the song progressively becomes a productive heavy-sound machine! The ‘decibels’ are notably reduced with the dreamy n’ sweet “Forest”, only to change side and start slowly building the heavy sound again with the psychic “Follow Me”, rhythm and lead guitars are creating a hot fuzzy shoegaze motive, capable to automatically-when-close-eyes transport the listener to other dimensions. “Sleep” is a carefully acid-drenched poppy ballad while the album ends with “Lsd”. As the title indicates, this is an 8 min long tune, drenched into Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, creating a mind blending hazy garagy atmos with lots of fuzzy swirling guitar sounds, it’s like listening to an abandoned industrialized mutant ‘version’ of the 13th Floor Elevators! Love it to the Bone! Invest… (TimeLord Michalis)
