If the Dionysians’ debut summer single felt like stumbling upon a forgotten 7-inch spinning in a half-lit basement bar, their debut album “Να Κάψουμε Το Χτες” arrives like a full-blown séance of the Greek-spoken garage spirit, summoned, electrified, and set on fire. This isn’t just a revival; it’s a reclamation. In an era where “retro” often means plastic vintage cosplay, the duo of Kostas Miliaras and Giorgos Papakostas dig straight into the raw ore of the ’60s and forge something bristling with today’s voltage. Every track feels both familiar and freshly cut, as if the band wired nostalgia to a live current and dared it to spark. Self-written, self-performed, self-produced, the record carries the unmistakable fingerprint of two musicians who know exactly what they want their world to sound like: fuzz-bitten, organ-soaked, melody-driven, and completely unashamed of its attitude. Add Yiannis Voulgaris’ warm analog mastering and a cameo from Stelios Askoxylakis of The Sound Explosion on “Το Κορίτσι Του Βούντου” and you get a debut that doesn’t just tip its hat to the past, it torches it, dances around the flames, and builds something new from the smoke. “Να Κάψουμε Το Χτες” doesn’t ask permission. It kicks the door open and invites you into a haze of tambourine sweat, basement reverb, and melodies that stick to your ribs from the first spin. In short: the Dionysians haven’t just arrived, they’ve erupted.
“Να Κάψουμε Το Χτες” contains 5 tracks on the first side and 6 on the second. Farfisa and tambourine take the wheel on the opener “Τώρα Μου Λες”, this is a dance-floor igniter, a blast of mid-’60s Greek garage electricity. It’s explosive, sweaty, and instantly irresistible. George steps on the mic for a relentless, driving stomper called “Αφερέγγυα Φιλιά”. Longing and sarcasm ride side-by-side over fuzz-a-delic haze and a Farfisa that practically combusts. “Μοναξιά Είναι” is another fast groove-a-delic burner, straight out of the golden era of Greek ’60s cool. Features an addictive guitar solo tailor-made to light up live stages. “Διαστροφή” is a mid-tempo R’n’B-kissed tune that opens with a killer harmonica attack. By the finale, the harmonica is in full berserker mode, no survivors left behind. Side ‘A’ comes to an end in a weird but wonderful way with “Το Κορίτσι Του Βούντου”. Stelios’ unmistakable sax injects a psychedelic shimmer, giving the track a cinematic, almost occult allure… Side ‘B’ opens with “Ποτέ Ξανά”, back to the glorious “Shake” sound, pure Greek ’60s adrenaline. Impossible to sit still; this one demands sweat and motion. “Τόσα Χάλια” is a track that bridges Greek ’60s nostalgia with the urgency of Now. Up-tempo, garage-charged, and echoing the wild spirit of ? and the Mysterians (in a way)… Shimmering guitar, powerhouse drums, killer bass, and blazing Farfisa collide into a fuzzy, hazy-a-delic explosion, a true sonic cocktail called “Σε Βλέπω Παντού”. “Ηλεκτρισμένα Beach Bar” has spiraling organ, melting fuzz, and a mood that feels like a forgotten August afternoon in an overcooked seaside bar. Pure stage-igniting haze… Groovylicious and Farfisa-forward, with garage vibes galore on the tremendous song “Φλοράλ Πουκάμισο”. The guitar briefly flirts with West Coast psych before the track accelerates into a dance-a-delic fever dream! The albums comes to an end with “Χορός”, Garage fused with Psychedelia and a Middle Eastern twist, primitive, ecstatic, and utterly explosive. A perfect slice of Greek-a-delia! If god Dionysus ever needed a house band for one of his notorious symposiums, The Dionysians would be tuning up in the corner…
In conclusion, The Dionysians don’t simply revive the ghosts of the Greek ’60s, they converse with them, poke them, dance with them, and finally push them into the present with a grin and a scorched Farfisa chord. There’s something beautifully reckless in the way they approach garage rock: no safety nets, no retro posturing, just two musicians chasing the spark until it becomes a flame big enough to light their own path. If this album is “burning yesterday”, then whatever comes next is already smoldering beneath the surface, waiting for the right kick, the right night, the right crowd. And that’s the thrill: The Dionysians have opened a door. Now we get to see who follows the noise. TimeLord Michalis
