Philadelphia’s Stinking Lizaveta have never sounded like a band particularly interested in standing still. Forged in the basement-level punk underground of West Philly back in the 1990s, Yanni Papadopoulos on guitar, Alexi Papadopoulos on upright electric bass, and Cheshire Agusta on drums have spent more than three decades turning heavy music into their own strange territory, somewhere between doom, jazz, punk, avant-rock and the kind of psychedelic intensity that needs no colourful signpost to announce itself. Ten full-length albums down the road, they still approach every show as if it might be their first — or their last.
Now they return with “Cassandra, Prophet of Doom”, their tenth album, released on September 16th, 2026 through SRA Records. A record built from weight, riffs, tension, and the raw physical force of a trio that has spent years on the road. After yet another European tour, including appearances at Stoned From The Underground, Bear Stone, and New Long Fest in Greece, the Philly veterans return to the underground battlefield with another heavy dose of their unmistakable doom-heavy mutation. The ghosts of Black Flag, Gone, Bad Brains, Steve Albini, Earthless and The Obsessed may provide useful coordinates, but Stinking Lizaveta have long been following their own crooked map.
“Cassandra, Prophet of Doom” contains 8 instrumental tracks. The opener, “Champion of My Mind”, unfolds their incomparable style from the very first second, with the electric guitar naturally taking command, getting heavy and then even heavier, while the pounding drums and hot, killer bass lines build an irresistible rhythmic attack. “Stinkface” follows with another killer blow, more rhythmical, super-heavy and driven by a shimmering Heavy guitar sound that feels perfectly capable of setting any stage on fire. “Please Start Now” is made for anyone who loves instrumental, electric-guitar-dominated Heavy Rock; powerful drumming keeps the whole thing moving while the guitar riffs seem to be coming straight out of Hell, finally exploding into an electric paroxysm. After all this heaviness, “Lindsay Wagner Intro” offers a cool little interlude, flirting with a slightly Spacey atmosphere and carrying a faint reminder of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley”. Then “Lindsay Wagner” slows the pace without lowering the decibels, spreading a beautiful electric guitar melody across the track and creating a nostalgic feeling for those good old 70s Hard Rock days, before gradually becoming quite Heavy towards the end. The title track, “Cassandra, Prophet of Doom”, begins in a dreamy, doomy psychedelic mood, the electric guitar leading us through a dark and hazy path, slowly transforming the piece into a Super Heavylicious anthem before falling back into a doomier atmosphere, rising Heavy once again and then slowing down. Quite an adventurous journey and probably one of the strongest moments on the album. “Sherman’s March” initially takes the shape of a slow, balladesque piece, but there is maximum power underneath it, turning it into a Heavy-rock marching anthem with constant shifts in speed and mood, once again bringing back memories of the good old mid-70s Hard Rock days. Finally, “Never to Be Believed” starts slowly and with an almost improvisational character, supported by a steady and heavy rhythm section while a hot, shimmering BLUESY guitar sound gradually takes over. Another cool track and, for me, one of the strongest moments of this heavy journey.
In conclusion, “Cassandra, Prophet of Doom” is another proof that Stinking Lizaveta still knows how to turn three instruments into a wall of sound, keeping the spirit of underground Heavy Rock alive without falling into nostalgia. Heavy, dark, and adventurous, this is music made to be played loud — preferably on vinyl, with the neighbors nowhere in sight! All aficionados invest! TimeLord Michalis
