It’s been nearly a decade since The Roaring 420s first emerged from the paisley shadows of Dresden, Germany. With their signature blend of surf-tinged freakbeat, Velvet haze, and electric sitar swirls, they’ve long felt like the house band for a parallel 1968 that never ended. Now, with their third full-length album “We’re All In It Together”, (previous LP albums: “What Is Psych?” 2014, LP, Stoned Karma Records, and “You Can’t Get Out Alive”, 2015 LP, It’s A Gas! Records), the 420s return not to reinvent the trip, but to drive it further out — deeper into the incense fog and farther beyond the fuzz. Strap in. The caravan’s moving again, and this time, it’s packed with color, echo, and that strange sense of unity… All songs written and performed by The Roaring 420s. Let’s meet the usual suspects: Florian Hohmann (vocals, guitars, keyboards, sitar), Martin Zerrenner (bass, vocals), and Luisa Mühl (drums, vocals). There are 2 guest musicians on this release, Paul Riemer (additional vocals, piano, percussion) and Matt Adams (additional guitar on “This is no rebellion”). “We’re All In It Together” consists of 11 tracks. The Roaring 420s don’t waste a second reintroducing themselves, “Suburbs” kicks off like time froze in 2015 and snapped back into motion in September 2025. It’s a groove-a-delic, guitar-driven, funky opener that feels both familiar and fresh. Crisp rhythm, jangly tones, and that unmistakable 420s warmth. “Onward Indian” starts… Wait… is that “Sugar Baby Love”?! For a fleeting five seconds, yes! But then it flips into a fiery funkadelic anthem with relentless energy and infectious dancefloor vibes. Furious in pace but joyful in spirit, this one’s made for wild night drives and manic late-summer singalongs… Slowing things down slightly with “Passing These Days”, a song that finds a sweet mid-tempo pocket, a funky flirtation with both groove and psychedelia. The guitar work shines here, shimmering with finesse. It sways with Beat charm and dips into something dreamier halfway through — a psych-glazed gem that floats as much as it struts. “On The Run”, has a tighter, punchier affair, it blends Power Pop’s urgency with Surf’s sunburnt energy and a dash of Garage edge. Propelled by a rhythmic drive, it’s made to move, drenched in ‘60s aesthetics without sounding derivative. Another danceable burner… Things get weird, beautifully weird with “Fear & Loathing In Vienna”. From its cryptic vocal samples to the trippy sonic layering, this is the Roaring 420s at their most cinematic. Evoking hallucinatory visions á la Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the track spirals into a psych-freakout of the highest order. That guitar finale? Utterly sublime. Undeniably one of the album’s peaks! Cool as ever, “Waving From The Other Side” lays back into a steady mid-tempo stroll. There’s a subtle melancholy under its catchy veneer, like a strange love letter sent through reverb. Power-pop glimmers, psych undertones, and an earworm of a keys section, a low-key stunner. The title says it all on “Fun Funn Funnn”, summer fun distilled into one minute and forty-six seconds of surfy joy. Like crashing waves and cold beer on a hot Dresden afternoon, this is pure escapism. Think Dick Dale gets a paisley tan… On “La-la-la MDMA”, the “la-la-la” motif goes full throttle, becoming not just a lyrical hook but a euphoric mantra. With razor-sharp guitar lines and a melody that won’t quit, it’s an irresistible ode to love. You’ll be humming it for days! Back to mid-tempo funk with “Here We Go Again”, it thrives on its hypnotic vocal rhythm (“pa ra pa pa ra ra ra pa rara”) and a twangy guitar that winks at psychedelia without diving in fully. It’s groovy, sleek, and just weird enough to keep you guessing. Another album highlight… Opening with a wah-wah swagger, “This Is Not Rebellion (It’s A Matter Of Fact)” channels late-60s grandeur, part pop, part funk, with soft country undercurrents and flashes that echo the emotional sweep of something like Hey Jude. A slow-burning, genre-blurring standout with undeniable vintage charm… It seems that The Roaring 420s saved the most psychedelic for last. With pounding drums, swirling keys, and fuzzed-out guitar textures, “Sunshine Psychonauts” is a full-on psych rock detonation with a euphoric, high-octane finale and a clear highlight to end the trip! Psychedelically Cool!
With “We’re All In It Together”, The Roaring 420s reaffirm their place as time-traveling alchemists of the underground psych scene. This third album is more than a continuation; it’s a crystallization of their sound, tighter, groovier, and more confidently adventurous. They weave surf, funk, garage, psych, and pop into a Technicolor tapestry! Whether you’re dancing in your kitchen or driving into the sunset, this record offers a soundtrack that is as communal as it is personal. The Roaring 420s are here to remind us that we’re all in it together, and that… the beat goes on… TimeLord Michalis
