Emerging once again from the New Zealand wilderness, Lamp Of The Universe return not with a statement, but with a state of being. “Existence Of The Self”, due out on February 26, 2026, via Sound Effect Records, feels less like a new album and more like a continuation of a long, inward journey — one that has always unfolded outside of scenes, trends, or timelines. Craig Williamson’s music has never rushed to meet the present; instead, it bends time, looking simultaneously backwards and forwards, dissolving the idea of “now” into something deeper and more fluid.
Formed in the end of the ’90s, Lamp Of The Universe has remained a singular entity in the global psychedelic underground, rooted in acoustic folk, sitar-drenched ritualism and early cosmic psych, yet always driven by spiritual intent rather than revivalism. Across decades of releases, Williamson has refined a language of sound built on trance, repetition and meditation. “Existence Of The Self” carries all the familiar hallmarks — acoustic textures, droning strings, hypnotic rhythms — but radiates a more enlightened, inward-facing aura. This is a quiet act of transcendence, inviting the listener to slow down, listen deeper, and dissolve along with it.

“Existence Of The Self” contains 6 tracks/compositions, equally divided into the 2 sides of the LP vinyl album. From the very first second, the album opens in darkness and transcendence. The opener, “Sceptre of Healing” (4:59), is a track that feels like a long-lost Tibetan liturgy, ceremonial and deeply hypnotic. Eastern psychedelic vibrations dominate, with trippy sitar lines and a flute that sounds both magical and haunted. After their heavier sonic excursions, Lamp Of The Universe return here to familiar, sitar-based ritual ground — ancient, meditative, and quietly powerful.
The mysticism deepens with “Ship of Eternity” (5:55), backwards-sounding guitar textures, acid-laced sitar and swirling percussion create a drifting, otherworldly environment. Craig Williamson’s voice and the sitar seem to merge into a single spiritual current, each completing the other. Deeply Eastern in spirit, the track unfolds like a slow ascension into psychedelic devotion.
Slow-moving yet remarkably heavy, “Mantric Waves” (8:48) feels like a hybrid of futuristic Eastern psychedelia and cosmic ritual. Synthesizers add a kosmische dimension, while space-soaked effects stretch perception. Psychedelia flirts with prog, prog dissolves into the cosmic, and the result is a fully hallucinogenic, almost out-of-body experience — massive, immersive, and mind-sticking.
Side ‘B’ opens with “Into the Light” (5:06), acoustic guitar filtered through flanger effects creates a sound that is gentle yet abrasive at the same time. This is New Age psychedelia warped into something disorienting — a strange, distorted psych ballad that feels fragile, unsteady, and beautifully lost.
“Existence of the Self” (8:18) starts, and a ghostly psychedelic atmosphere takes shape through trippy electric guitar textures, before the sitar enters in full radiance. Everything suddenly expands — brighter, heavier, and drenched in cosmic energy. Space-a-delic bubbles swirl around the listener as the track evolves into a deeply immersive, heavy-psych transcendental trip.
The album closes with a torturously slow descent into subterranean darkness. “Arkkadian Ritual” (6:43) is futuristic, Eastern-inspired creep-a-delia that unfolds like a forgotten ritual from some remote Arcadian mountain tribe. Weirdness reigns supreme, ceremonial and otherworldly, leaving the listener suspended inside an ancient, unexplored rite…
In conclusion and after a couple of late-night listening, “Existence Of The Self” feels like a sustained ritual. Lamp Of The Universe dissolve song form into meditation, sound into intention, guiding the listener through shadow, trance and illumination. This is psychedelia not as escape, but as inner passage — slow, ancient, and quietly transformative. This is not music to be played — it is music to be entered. One of the best albums of 2026. Dig!
