For more than three decades, In The Labyrinth has occupied a unique corner of the progressive underground, quietly crafting music that refuses to acknowledge stylistic boundaries. Guided by the singular vision of Peter Lindahl, the Stockholm-based project has consistently explored the fertile meeting ground between progressive rock, world music, classical composition, psychedelia and ancient musical traditions, creating a sound that is both timeless and impossible to categorize.
Their seventh album, “Worlds On Fire”, serves as a remarkable testament to that restless creative spirit. The album draws together material spanning more than two decades, with some compositions tracing their origins back to the 1990s. Carefully remastered, remixed and reassembled, these recordings form a surprisingly coherent journey through the many dimensions of the In The Labyrinth universe. Progressive rock structures coexist with oriental melodies, medieval echoes, folk traditions and classical arrangements, while psychedelic atmospheres weave effortlessly through the album’s richly textured soundscapes.
With an impressive ensemble of musicians and vocalists contributing to the recordings, “Worlds On Fire” unfolds as a collection of miniature worlds, each possessing its own identity while contributing to a larger, interconnected vision. It is music that rewards curiosity, inviting listeners to wander through labyrinthine passages of sound where past and present, East and West, tradition and experimentation coexist in perfect balance.
Let’s take a look at the tracks of “Worlds Of Fire”…
The opener, “Pater Noster” is a beautifully crafted slice of late ’60s ceremonial psychedelia, clearly inspired by Electric Prunes’ “Mass In F Minor” yet possessing its own identity through its mystical atmosphere and liturgical grandeur. “Kabul” is an exotic instrumental tapestry where medieval textures, raga-psych, art-prog and Eastern jazz-rock influences merge into a richly imaginative sonic landscape. Driven by sitar, tabla and Ebow guitar, “Disillusion” is an Eastern-flavored psychedelic gem that balances apocalyptic undertones with an unexpectedly melodic and accessible flow. “Golden Hair” is far more than a cover version, this stunning reinterpretation of Syd Barrett’s classic evolves into a mesmerizing psychedelic raga journey, elevated by inspired arrangements and haunting saxophone passages. Peter really took this song to another level making this recording one of the best versions of Syd’s “Golden Hair”… “God Is For Sale”, a thoughtful acid-folk narrative wrapped in warm vocals and evocative storytelling, recalling the socially conscious side of the early ’70s British underground. “Sagarmatha” is a short but enchanting instrumental blending folk, medieval and progressive elements into a delicate Himalayan daydream. “Varanasi Sunrise”, serene, meditative and deeply atmospheric, this gentle raga-psych excursion perfectly captures the spiritual aura suggested by its title. “The Endless City” is dark, cinematic and experimental, an instrumental that drifts through eerie psychedelic corridors while maintaining a compelling improvisational spirit. “The Mirror” is a dreamlike psychedelic ballad filled with warmth and subtle wonder, evoking reflections, memories and the surreal charm of a musical looking glass. Traditional Swedish folk receives an elegant progressive treatment with “Out In The Pasture”, resulting in a charming and highly enjoyable folk-rock interlude. (This is a traditional folk song in Swedish called ‘Uti vår hage’ here given a predominantly instrumental treatment inspired by Sweden’s foremost folk rock band Kebnekajse)… “Nightriders” is a beautifully crafted mid-tempo folk-pop song, rich in melody and atmosphere, with an effortless sense of nostalgic charm. Beginning as a melancholic medieval-folk meditation, the title track, “Worlds On Fire”, gradually blossoms into a cinematic psychedelic finale enriched by sound effects and ghostly vocal textures. (“Worlds On Fire” was written by American musician Gregg Fitzpatrick after he deserted from the Vietnam war ending up in India after which he eventually made it to Sweden. An album called Handgjort (Handmade) was recorded in the early 70s from where “Worlds On Fire” but also the bass line of Colombo was extracted. This cover was initially released on a CD compilation called Rökstenen, a tribute to Swedish progressive rock of the 70’s, which was released by Musea in the year of 2009). The album comes to an end with “Ever-Rest”, a peaceful and contemplative closing instrumental, blending ambient moods, Mellotron textures and meditative serenity into a deeply relaxing conclusion…
Taken as a whole, “Worlds Of Fire” showcases the remarkable breadth of Peter Lindahl’s musical vision, effortlessly weaving psychedelia, progressive rock, folk traditions, Eastern influences and cinematic atmospheres into a richly rewarding listening experience. Part archival collection, part artistic statement, it stands as one of the most diverse and enchanting chapters in the long history of In The Labyrinth! TimeLord Michalis
