From the first hazy notes of “Realized”, it becomes clear that Magic Castles have no intention of simply looking backwards. Instead, Jason Edmonds and his Minneapolis companions draw from the warm, analogue spirit of late-60s folk-psych and reshape it into something dreamy, spacious and unmistakably contemporary. Formed in the early 2000s, Magic Castles have steadily carved their own path through the psych underground, building a sound around lush arrangements, vintage guitars and organs, shimmering textures and beautifully floating vocal harmonies. Their 8th album, and first for Fuzz Club, finds the band at a particularly refined point in their journey, with nine melody-driven compositions unfolding like slow-moving psyche reveries. There is plenty of nostalgia here, but “Realized” never feels trapped in it; its combination of folk-rock warmth, shoegaze shimmer and modern slowcore-psych sensibility creates an immersive, widescreen atmosphere that feels both familiar and freshly rediscovered.

Opening side one, “Hey Alright” begins with a soft, hazy shoegaze texture before gradually transforming into a melodic missile of psyche Slowcore, exploding with an intense ’90s British alt-indie feeling and a wonderfully dream-a-delic atmosphere. “Abandoned Mansions” follows with soft, sweet, and mellow vocals, maintaining the album’s dreamy gaze-a-delic character while unfolding like a deeply emotional ballad. With “Samata”, Magic Castles deliver one of the album’s strongest moments, combining cool, sentimental melody with a distinctly late ’60s West Coast psych flavour, before building towards a wonderfully pompous finale. “Mary Anne” keeps things at a mid-tempo pace, blending folkie-rock touches with slowcore and alternative rock into another highly melodic piece. Turning to side two, “Space Manual” sees the band diving deeper into a spacey, shoegaze-infused psychedelic soundscape, carried by cool harmony vocals and once again culminating beneath a thick cloud of guitar feedback. “Got Me Waiting” slows things down with a beautiful balladesque number that carries a strong late ’80s/early ’90s sensibility, while “Summertime Fingertips” introduces a nostalgic, dreamlike atmosphere filled with warm summer vibes and an easy, floating charm. “Don’t Go” continues the ballad tradition, offering another sentimental moment with a subtle ’60s balladeering character. And then comes “Realized”, the absolute highlight of the record and, for me, the track that deserves repeated spins throughout the summer of 2026. Here, Magic Castles seem to bring The Byrds together with Brian Wilson, wrapping sublime vocal harmonies and melodic songwriting in shimmering shoegaze/slowcore textures and pure summer psychedelia—a truly gorgeous finale to an already captivating album.

With “Realized”, Magic Castles deliver a beautifully immersive piece of modern Shoegaze/Slowcore Psych, where late-’60s melodic sensibilities and analogue warmth coexist effortlessly. Dreamy, nostalgic and rich in melody, it is an album that rewards repeated listening, revealing new colors and textures with every spin. TimeLord Michalis
