Some bands simply play Space-Rock music; others seem to treat it as a living, breathing universe. Germany’s Space Debris belong firmly to the latter category, carrying the spirit of Space-Rock embodied with free-form Krautrock, hard rock and progressive psychedelia into the present without losing sight of the exploratory attitude that defined the genre’s pioneering years. Since 2002, the band has built an impressive underground catalogue of more than 20 releases and sold over 25,000 records, always following its own cosmic trajectory. “Ice Flower Archive Vol. 9”, released by Breitklang in July 2026, digs deeper into that ever-expanding archive, bringing together seven long tracks that had previously remained confined to streams or Bandcamp releases, with only “Zenobian Dance” having appeared on vinyl before. Featuring material from different line-ups across the band’s history alongside the completely new 2026 track “Iceflower”, the album feels less like a conventional compilation and more like another chapter in Space Debris’ ongoing psych-space journey — raw, spacious, improvisational and deeply rooted in the free spirit of the underground. Even the beautiful iceflower photographed by Magic Petra for the artwork seems to echo the band’s philosophy: a small, natural miracle, untouched by AI, offering what they aptly describe as “A Greeting from the Universe”.
“Zenobian Dance” opens the journey with an improvised, spacey Krauty instrumental, where loose rhythmic structures and groovy, jazzy vibes create a wonderfully fluid atmosphere. “Ice Flower” follows with a fascinating blend of Space music and jazzy textures, enriched by a wonderfully funky 70s attitude; its cinematic character almost makes it sound like the soundtrack to some obscure late 70s sci-fi B-movie, and it works brilliantly. At nearly 22 minutes, “Voodoo” is the album’s first major expedition into the unknown, beginning with a primitive jungle-like drum rhythm before the electric guitar gradually enters and sends the whole thing into the stratosphere. Bluesy passages, constant changes of mood and tempo, and increasingly heavy Space-Rock eventually lead to a brutal, Hawkwind-ized cosmic assault, before the track closes with an awe-inspiring atmosphere that recalls some of the early psychedelic explorations of Pink Floyd — fantastic stuff! “Clawinnienett” starts with the Hammond taking centre stage, setting the foundations for another improvised Space-Rock jam, while sharp, funky guitar lines add an unexpected groove. Gradually, however, the mood turns darker and more psychedelically trippy, with acid-soaked electric guitar sounds taking the track into more twisted territory. “Lornas Vibrator” in its longer version is yet another extended improvisation, combining Space-Rock with funky grooves and a distinctly cinematic feel; its loose, jam-oriented character perfectly captures the band’s instinctive approach to making music. “The Feels Of A Dinosaur”, clocking in at 18:44, is another adventurous and seriously trippy excursion, blending Space, Kraut, Blues and Funk with just a touch of pure psychedelia. The improvisational and experimental spirit remains strong throughout, while the appearance of a few wonderfully heady, almost “stoned” vocals towards the end adds an unexpected twist to this amazingly mind-melting trip. Finally, “Dog Flow” brings us back to the unmistakable Space Debris formula, with the Hammond leading the way as the other instruments follow its cosmic trail. Jazz and blues influences slip naturally into another free-flowing Space-Rock jam, making it a fitting finale and a perfect example of that distinctive Space Debris sound… TimeLord Michalis
