Somewhere on the shores of the Corinthian Gulf, in Lechaion, the ancient port of Corinth, four musicians have been keeping the spirit of instrumental surf alive for more than a decade — but never as a mere exercise in nostalgia. Since their formation in 2010, The Aqua Barons have built their own distinctive take on the genre, one where reverb-drenched guitars, fuzz, rock ’n’ roll attitude and psychedelic colours meet under an endless summer sun. At the heart of this peculiar surf machine are Petros Sotiropoulos on lead guitar, Fender Bass VI, keys, tenor sax and vocals, Panagiotis Dimitroulas on rhythm guitar, Aris Spanoudakis on bass and vocals, and Konstantinos Bessas on drums and percussion. Now, with their third full-length, “Back On Track with… The Aqua Barons”, the band sounds more confident than ever, expanding their instrumental vocabulary without losing the immediacy and raw charm that have always been central to their music. There is plenty of twang and reverb, of course, but also fuzz, keyboards, saxophone, and even a cinematic touch that proves that surf music can still travel far beyond the beach. This is not an attempt to recreate a lost era; it is The Aqua Barons taking everything they love about it, plugging it in, turning up the volume, and making it their own.

“Back On Track with… The Aqua Barons” contains 12 tracks, equally divided on the 2 sides of the vinyl LP album. The album opens with “A Shadow In The Mist”, immediately setting a late-night summer mood, as its sentimental and nostalgic Surf atmosphere slowly emerges through a subtle touch of exotica. “Kolobotsi A Go-Go” changes the scenery completely, bringing a happy, sunny Surf-A-Go-Go feeling, while the cool tenor sax adds an extra dimension and takes us straight back to the late ’50s and the golden age of instrumental rock. Things get faster and fuzzier with “Fuzzlalum”, a furious Surf ’n’ Roller driven by a relentless rhythm and some deliciously fuzzy guitar work, before “Pagoto Kerashi” returns to the more emotional side of The Aqua Barons, with its wonderfully nostalgic mood and that gorgeous, unmistakable surf guitar sound. “Theme Of Exodus” takes us somewhere else entirely, finding a magical crossroads where Surf, Rockabilly and Country & Western meet, resulting in a highly cinematic instrumental that could easily accompany a forgotten Western or road movie. With “Daydream Blues”, the decibels come down, and the mood turns bittersweet, as this heartbreaking instrumental ballad unfolds slowly, melancholic and deeply nostalgic.

Flipping over to side two, “Barons On Wheels” immediately kicks the engine back into gear with a fantastic instrumental that sounds tailor-made for the main theme of some long-lost outlaw biker movie. “Surf Crusade” keeps the momentum going with its hot, groovy, and highly danceable surf rhythm, a track that could comfortably sit alongside classic surf hits by bands such as The Wipers, The Surfaris, or Jan & Dean. “Tell Tale Guitar” brings us back to the sweeter, more mellow and bittersweet side of the Aqua Barons’ sound, enriched by a mind-bending Farfisa and a glorious shimmering electric guitar that can’t help but recall certain moments from the Greek pop scene of the mid-’60s. “Land Of The Great Ghoul” is another wonderfully cinematic excursion, a fast, groovy and stomping Surf number that sounds absolutely perfect for the soundtrack of an early-’60s monster B-movie, complete with imaginary creatures emerging from some mysterious laboratory. “Cove Of Dreams” slows things down again, offering a dreamy, almost dream-a-delic Surf instrumental where the guitar seems to melt into the saxophone, creating one of the album’s most atmospheric and sentimental moments. Finally, “Lonely Siren (Outro)” brings the journey to its natural conclusion in just 68 seconds, with a soft, slow, and deeply nostalgic mood that feels like watching the last lights disappear as the Aqua Barons’ strange and wonderful surf voyage finally comes to an end.

With “Back On Track with… The Aqua Barons”, the Lechaion quartet proves once again that instrumental surf can be much more than a trip back to the past. Reverb, fuzz, Farfisa, sax and shimmering guitars combine with rockabilly, exotica, country and cinematic moods, creating a colourful soundtrack that feels both vintage and unmistakably their own. Twelve tracks, countless imaginary landscapes, and one hell of a ride — The Aqua Barons are definitely back on track! TimeLord Michalis
