There is something rather fascinating about the way a power trio can turn a handful of instruments into an entire universe of sound. No need for excessive ornamentation, unnecessary complications or a wall of vocals. Just three musicians, a strong rhythmic foundation and guitars capable of taking you places where time seems to lose its usual meaning. Hailing from Dinan, Brittany, France, KALAC are back with their new EP, “Selene”, continuing their exploration of hypnotic psychedelic territories, somewhere between the repetitive pulse of krautrock, the hazy textures of shoegaze, the freedom of 70s psychedelia and the endless horizons of space rock.

Formed around the musical chemistry of Théo Latappy (bass, vocals, synths), Théophile Lallouet (drums, percussion), and Clément Bauduin (guitar, vocals), KALAC have been developing their own sonic identity since 2022. Their music is predominantly instrumental, allowing the interplay between guitar, bass and drums to take center stage, while occasional French vocals add another layer of character to their compositions. Following their early release “Conscience” (2023) and their first full-length album “Odyssée” (2024), the trio now returns with four new compositions, once again released through an international alliance of independent underground labels: Crème Brûlée Records, Clostridium Records, Echodelick Records, and The Weird Beard.

Recorded live at Fly-House Studio in Brittany in May 2025, with Franck Headon behind the recording and mixing desk, and mastered by Loki Lockwood at Creepy Hollow Studio in Melbourne, Australia, “Selene” captures the band’s collective energy in a direct and organic way. The presence of Laurence Rhodia, contributing backing vocals to “El Diablo”, adds a further voice to this otherwise three-headed musical creature. Four trips into a world of hypnotic rhythms, swirling guitars and cosmic vibrations, where the journey itself matters far more than the destination. Time to let the moonlight take control!

Opening with “Lune”, KALAC immediately take us into a fuzzy, trippy neo-psychedelic landscape, driven by spacey influences, a cool, floating guitar melody and a repetitive rhythmic pulse lurking in the background. The male vocals arrive in a deliberately slow, almost torturous manner, perfectly matching the surrounding psych soundscape. Somewhere around the middle, things become increasingly space-dream-a-delic, with Heavy Space Acid slowly filling the atmosphere, as the band seems to be reaching for a climax that, interestingly enough, never quite arrives. “Atlantide” takes a more motorik direction, with a super-Krauty approach that gradually reveals the band’s deep affection for the repetitive German underground tradition. French vocals, a powerful rhythm section and a steady, driving beat provide the backbone, while the composition flirts with Space Rock before making a few heavier psychedelic excursions towards its final moments. Moving on, “Velobar” kicks off with a loose and lively drum performance, quickly followed by a rather cool melody, as KALAC once again unfold their personal amalgam of psychedelic, space and Kraut influences. A little heavier this time, the track also carries some interesting late-90s post-rock touches, with a subtle Shoegaze flavor adding another dimension to their already colorful sonic mixture. Finally, “El Diablo” comes along with a killer bassline and a fuzzy, super-delic guitar sound that leaves its unmistakable mark throughout the entire composition. Psychedelic heaviness is all over the place, while guest vocalist Laurence adds another interesting layer to the band’s sonic chemistry. Flirting with Krautrock and Space Rock, the track gradually becomes increasingly dance-a-delic towards the end, as if somebody has finally opened the gates and invited us to Dance with the Devil. Hehe… you get the picture!

In conclusion, with “Selene”, KALAC deliver four hypnotic trips through fuzzy psychedelia, motorik rhythms and cosmic soundscapes. Nothing revolutionary, but certainly an enjoyable little journey for those of us who still believe that a repetitive beat, a distorted guitar and a healthy dose of Space Acid can take us a long way. Keep tripping, KALAC! TimeLord Michalis
