Somewhere on the outskirts of Wuhan, among half-ruined schools, vast waters and concrete towers that seem to imprison the horizon, a spacecraft is preparing for departure. Its destination? An unpredictable universe where Krautrock engines, ’70s space-rock voyages, psychedelic noise and spiritual jazz collide in an endless game of cosmic transformation. Founded in 2022, Spring Hill Post Tide have emerged as a distinctive force within China’s new generation of independent instrumental music, building their own sonic world through improvisation, expansive atmospheres and explosive walls of sound. Yet, their debut “The City Portal Will Be Open” is more than a ticket to some distant psychedelic galaxy. Beneath its interstellar wanderings lies a reflection on modern urban life, alienation, blurred realities and the courage required to push open a door when the world around us seems determined to keep it shut. Recorded with the participation of 14 different musicians, the album draws upon an unusually rich palette of sounds, bringing together electric guitars, bass, drums and synthesizers with tenor and soprano saxophones, ney flute, bansuri, sitar, violin, theremin, vocals and samples. Traditional and electronic elements drift into one another, opening unexpected passages between ancient echoes and futuristic visions. Released on October 16, 2026, through WV Sorcerer Productions, this is an invitation to leave familiar coordinates behind, surrender to the unknown and discover what happens when the city portal finally opens. The spacecraft is ready. The acid has no end.

“The City Portal Will Be Open” contains 11 tracks… The album opens with the title track, “The City Portal Will Be Open”, an ambient-like introduction where strings and horns slowly emerge from the shadows, before the adventurous drumming grows more insistent. Spring Hill Post Tide unfold a totally lysergic, hallucinogenic psychedelic cloak, suspending everything in a strange twilight where sounds melt into one another. A dark anthem, complete with a distant female operatic voice that lends the whole scenery an almost cinematic dimension, it ends as serenely and unexpectedly as it began.
“1828” takes us somewhere else entirely, mixing strange effects and Anatolian-flavoured instrumentation with an uncoordinated, almost out-of-time drumbeat. Sampled voices lurk in the background while violin and trippy percussion create a stoned, let-loose, trip-hop-like atmosphere. I can almost imagine this as the main theme of some historical documentary on National Geographic, although the images unfolding inside my head would probably be far stranger than anything shown on television.
“Balenciaga” adds more weight to the journey, with a spacey, complicated background full of sampled noises and human voices, while the violin takes centre stage, racing furiously as if trying to escape the gravitational pull of some distant planet. A steady beat keeps the whole contraption in orbit, but the other sounds, particularly that killer saxophone, seem desperate to unshackle this space vehicle and launch it into the unknown…
With “Sonic Player”, the sound of an engine starting sets the machinery in motion before the drums take the lead and the saxophone challenges them for command. Strange, almost bizarre orchestration, futuristic electronic effects and scattered voice samples create a restless sonic collage that flirts dangerously with the borders of avant-garde psychedelia, occasionally daring to cross them…
And then comes “Midnight’s Cosmic Guest”, one of the album’s finest moments. Weird noises introduce an insanely adventurous saxophone, blowing its way through unexpected territories while a killer bassline and powerful, steady drumming establish the foundations. Gradually, the atmosphere falls into obscurity, as a voice seemingly transmitted from another dimension adds a scary, claustrophobic feeling. Then, somewhere around the middle, the whole thing is launched into SPACE! This is old-school New Age motorik space rock, flirting with free jazz, Krautrock, avant-garde experimentation and psychedelia. Hawkwind meet Klaus Schulze for a session in Zappa’s studio, and yes, Uncle Frank is definitely present!
“A Day When the Children Sat Gazing at the Stone” arrives as a strange interlude, an abstract, ambient passage wrapped in a cold, industrialised atmosphere, where effects and samples replace any sense of conventional musical direction. It feels like an unfamiliar transmission caught between two dimensions…
“Journey To The East Pt.1” follows with a loose, lysergically intoxicated atmosphere, distant saxophone — or perhaps flute — sounds, tribal drumming and spacey effects. A melody gradually shines through the darkness, seemingly attempting to guide the listener out of the Matrix. A brief but effective passage, it works as the doorway to the enormous journey awaiting us in the second part…
“Journey To The East Pt.2” is an absolute trip! The saxophone takes the lead while bass and drums carve out a slow, dark, torturous path through the unknown. Gradually, everything accelerates, building a psychedelic amalgam of sounds that feels both improvisational and fiercely experimental. Suddenly, the machinery slows down, plunging us into a mind-blowing state of suspended consciousness, and we haven’t even reached the middle of the track yet! The engines roar back to life, desperately reaching for another climax, only to cut their power once more. By now, the listener is experiencing something close to an out-of-body experience: everything is upside down, everything is levitating, and the music accelerates again, crossing into the wild territories of experimental free jazz. Then comes the turning point, as mystic psychedelia spreads across the entire soundscape and finally carries us into a trance. What a track! What a trip!
With “Veiled Flora”, electronically flavoured, spacey effects introduce a slow, almost funereal atmosphere. A serene saxophone initially attempts to guide the proceedings, but soon the band is launched into space, building an exotic, trippy soundscape in which electronic textures and psychedelic melodies become impossible to separate. Once again, the mind plays tricks on you, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Absolutely awesome!
“Ode To Parting” brings another strangely orchestrated excursion, blending jazzy passages, cosmic effects and a dark, cinematic atmosphere with avant-garde psychedelia. Voice samples and fragmented sonic collages give the track an almost Nu-Jazz character, as if several different musical worlds had been cut apart and reassembled inside the studio under the command of adventurous drumming. Its ending, featuring eerie female chanting, is wonderfully unsettling. Weird, weird, weird… Love it!
Finally, “Gen Z Ad Astra” opens with the unmistakable, sitar-laced scent of an exotic journey, surrounded by spacey electronic effects that lead straight into that wonderful Kosmische universe of early ’70s Germany. Spectacular noises and sounds swirl around an experimental yet intensely cosmic framework, where ambient textures, space rock, psychedelia and raw emotion merge into one another. Beneath all the sonic exploration, there is a surprisingly human warmth, and the beautiful, emotional female chanting that closes the album leaves us suspended somewhere between earthly memories and the infinite universe…
“The City Portal Will Be Open” is one hell of a psychedelic voyage, a restless collision of cosmic dreams, experimental madness and improvisational freedom that leaves conventional musical boundaries floating somewhere in deep space. Spring Hill Post Tide have opened their portal, and I sincerely hope someone will be brave enough to bring this wonderful trip to vinyl. This music deserves to be experienced through the warmth, ritual and magic of a spinning record. ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF 2026 – TimeLord Michalis
