Somewhere between the mechanical pulse of Krautrock, the psychedelic haze of a late-night hallucination and the crushing weight of Space Rock, Arcane Allies have been quietly building their own strange little universe. Since their formation in 2016, the Berlin/Cologne trio have never seemed particularly interested in choosing one road and sticking to it. Their music prefers the cracks between genres, where repetition becomes hypnosis, electronics become organic and a simple rhythm can slowly mutate into something much darker.

With “Aestesia”, their sixth album, Arcane Allies push this approach even further. Motorik rhythms, shimmering synthesizers, surf-tinted guitars, ambient passages, heavy fuzz and free-form improvisation are thrown into the same sonic laboratory, but nothing feels randomly assembled. There is a sense of patience here, of allowing sounds to breathe, repeat, collide and gradually transform. The ghosts of CAN, Neu! and Kraftwerk may be somewhere in the machinery, while the minimalist ideas of Terry Riley and Steve Reich seem to be hiding underneath the surface.

Perhaps this is where the title becomes particularly appropriate. “Aestesia” feels less like an album you simply listen to and more like an altered state you enter. At one moment it can be almost weightless and meditative; the next, the same hypnotic pulse becomes oppressive, massive, and beautifully disorientating. And behind it all stands a rather remarkable family story: Arcane Allies is not only a band but a shared creative life, with Christiana, Sidney, and Joel Jaffe combining music, recording, touring, and family life with their two children.

After more than 300 shows across 15 countries and five independently released LPs, the trio hardly sounds like a band searching for its identity. With “Aestesia”, they sound like musicians who have found the door and are now inviting us inside. The only question is whether we are ready to follow the pulse…

“Aestesia” contains just 5 tracks; “Electronique” kicks the whole trip into motion with a rather fast beginning, a steady yet hypnotically trippy and powerful beat that immediately makes the body want to move. It is danceable, but certainly not in any conventional sense, surrounded by tons of spacey effects and shimmering electric guitars that flirt shamelessly with Space-Rock while constructing a kind of neo-Krauty scenery with a cheeky punky touch. Entirely instrumental (as all the tracks here), futuristic and slightly robotic, this is where I would happily introduce my own terminology: Cyber-Kraut! “Aestesia” then moves deeper into Kraut territory, with the influence of Klaus Schulze lurking somewhere behind its dreamy, super-spacey opening. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the piece grows heavier and more chaotic, as extra-hot shimmering guitars begin to tear through the atmosphere, eventually transforming the whole thing into a torturously slow Heavy-Space-Rock anthem. It feels like a Psych Cyber-delic piece of futuristic music, where repetition becomes increasingly massive, and the psychedelic experience starts losing its gentle side. “Mandelbrot Sandwich” takes the electronic element even further, delivering Cyber-Delia from somewhere far out in Space. Heavy, raw and loaded with spacey effects, it comes equipped with screaming-like guitars and a repetitive dance-a-delic frenzy that keeps pushing forward while continuously getting heavier. There is something wonderfully primitive beneath all the futuristic electronics here, as if an old psychedelic garage beast has somehow found itself trapped inside a malfunctioning computer. “Kallisto” follows under a hypnotically groovy sequencer, immediately establishing itself as a SPACE-oriented futuristic anthem. Spacey synth effects are everywhere, while a slightly cinematic atmosphere occasionally recalls the more cosmic and cinematic side of Vangelis. But Arcane Allies don’t remain in orbit for long; the track gradually transforms into a proper Krauty space-a-delic ride before drifting towards an Ozric Tentacles-influenced Space-Rock territory. Yes, Space is the Place, and “Kallisto” certainly knows the coordinates. Finally, “Exergy” stretches the journey across almost ten minutes, opening with a spacey, robotic, and heavily effected introduction before throwing a whole collection of experimental sounds into the same cosmic mixing chamber. Somehow, all these different elements unite into a super-motorik Kraut-a-delic scenery, with the rhythm carrying a very obvious CAN-inspired character. It feels like members of Neu! and Can have been locked inside a studio, switched on every machine available and simply started jamming without worrying about where the trip might lead. The result is cyber-delic, hypnotically trippy and constantly moving, a long-form motorik hallucination where the machinery itself seems to become part of the psych experience…

“Aestesia” is the kind of record that refuses to stay comfortably inside any one genre box. It takes the hypnotic pulse of Krautrock, throws it into a futuristic electronic universe and then lets Psych, Space-Rock, and Heavy Rock take control. Strange, restless and seriously addictive, this is a trip for those who like their psych with a little more machinery, darkness, and cosmic turbulence. Arcane Allies have built their own Cyber-Kraut machine — now climb aboard, turn it up, and let the circuitry fry your brain… TimeLord Michalis
