There is a certain kind of “groove” that gets under your skin before you even realize what is happening. Goblyns know exactly how to play that game, but on “Who Do You Fight?” they are not content with simply keeping the machinery running. The Berlin-based trio injects their restless rhythmic chemistry with a rawer rock attitude, soulful R&B touches and hazy psychedelic detours, allowing the music to breathe, mutate and occasionally take an unexpected turn. Giovanni Raymer-Votano’s guitar dances around Liam Broek’s bass and organ, while Francis Broek’s drums keep the whole thing locked into a hypnotic pulse. Frank’s voice appears on half the tracks, adding another human layer to this ever-shifting landscape. It is music with movement in its bones, but also with enough open space to let the mind wander.
Formed by brothers Liam Broek (bass and organ) and Francis Broek (drums and vocals), alongside their longtime friend Giovanni Raymer-Votano (guitar), Goblyns emerged in 2023 with the EP “This Is Spaghettification”, followed by their debut full-length “Hunki Bobo” in 2024 and “Three Sisters” in 2025, all released through Crazysane Records. Originally from Gqeberha, South Africa, and now operating between Berlin and Amsterdam, the trio draws inspiration from funk, soul, krautrock and psychedelic rock, building a sound where hypnotic repetition meets loose, organic spontaneity. On “Who Do You Fight?”, guest keyboardist Brodie White joins the proceedings, with Mark Eric Lewis recording and producing the album at Junxt Berlin, André Leo handling the mix, and Vincent Espi mastering it at Songololo Studios.
Nine tracks of shifting rhythms, psychedelic colours and soulful undertones make this latest chapter another invitation to follow Goblyns wherever their grooves decide to lead. No map required, just an open mind and a willingness to get lost.

The album opens with “Before I Break”, a tremolo-soaked fuzzy guitar lick and a compact rhythm section setting the scene for an irresistibly catchy guitar melody. A cool psych-spaghetti-western pop-rock tune that gets straight to the point and leaves its mark before you know it. “Ring Your Bell” takes a more measured approach, riding a steady, hypnotic beat with a blues-rock flavour and a delicious late-night groove, while “Kowie Cat” slows things down further, offering a soft, sweet and bluesy little number with a laid-back attitude and a touch of Southern Rock warmth. With “Lagoon”, the Goblyns step a little deeper into psychedelic territory, delivering a wonderfully cool instrumental where pop, rock and blues mingle in just the right proportions. If coolness could be translated into sound, this one would be a pretty convincing candidate. “Darlings” brings the tempo down again, with a soft bassline, haunted guitar tones, mellow vocals and creepy, trippy drumming shaping an almost ballad-like beginning. But don’t let that gentle entrance fool you: somewhere beyond the halfway mark, the track starts slipping into more dangerous psychedelic waters, turning into one of the album’s grooviest and most captivating moments. “Bugs” brings back the familiar Goblyns machinery, with a mid-tempo funky beat, infectious pop-rock-psych grooves and that hypnotic quality that seems to run through much of the record like a common thread. On “Last Time”, a strong dose of ’90s indie-pop-rock nostalgia meets a wonderfully cool bassline and sizzling, psych-tinged electric guitars, while pop-rock and R&B elements find their own comfortable meeting point. “Sienna’s Song” takes us into a slower, more intimate space; this is not exactly a dancefloor invitation, but you can certainly cradle yourself to its late-night, slow-grooving instrumental charms. Finally, “Naki Putzi” begins at a leisurely pace before the beat kicks in and turns up the heat, allowing funk, pop, psychedelia and rock to collide in another trademark Goblyns instrumental. Nine tracks, plenty of grooves, and a band that seems to understand that sometimes the simplest way to get inside your head is to find the right rhythm and let it do the talking… TimeLord Michalis
