The Mystery Lights are back — and they’re not here to play nice. With their latest double-sided scorcher “Before You Realize It / Cerebral Crack”, the New York psych-garage warriors tear open the speakers and punch straight through the middle of your brain. It’s a single that confirms what longtime fans already know: few modern bands sound this unhinged, this alive, and this committed to the sonic chaos they conjure on stage. Side A opens with “Before You Realize It”, a white-hot garage-punk banger (probably left out from their “Purgatory” LP) that channels the revolutionary spirit of MC5, but steers it through The Mystery Lights’ own acid-stained lens. From the first note, it’s pure propulsion: a pummeling rhythm section that lands like a flurry of gut punches, razor-edged guitars that slice the mix like glass, and Mike Brandon’s signature shout-sing delivery — frantic, feral, and unmistakably urgent. The song doesn’t build — it explodes, and somehow sustains that energy without ever tipping into chaos. You don’t listen to “Before You Realize It” — you ride it, clutching on until it spits you out at the end, breathless and vibrating. But the real surprise — or perhaps the real warning — waits on the flip. Of course, I’m referring to all of you that you haven’t check band’s “Purgatory” LP album yet, because this MAGNIFICENT PIECE OF MODERN PSYCHEDELIA is included there. “Cerebral Crack” is a slow-burning, psychedelic descent into somewhere far darker. Gone are the shout-alongs and speed-freak beats. Instead, you get something crawling, uneasy, and hypnotic: tape echo spirals, spectral textures, and a bassline that drags you downward like a current into the void. It’s a lysergic nightmare, a fever dream that feels both personal and cosmic, like navigating the corridors of your own subconscious with a flickering flashlight and no map. The vocal performance here is more ghost than man — distant, drowned, and distorted — echoing like the voice in your head you’re trying to ignore. It’s the flip side of ecstasy: not the high, but the comedown, not the dancefloor but the alley behind it at 4AM. Together, these two tracks don’t just showcase a band with range — they prove The Mystery Lights have a complete command of the garage-psych spectrum. From tight, adrenalized freakouts to expansive mind trips, they do it all with intention, attitude, and a rare analog warmth. In an era of playlists and pixel-perfect production, The Mystery Lights remind us what it means to plug in, turn up, and let the imperfections sing. Put it on. Turn it up. Let go… PS I feel incredibly lucky to be living in the same era as The Mystery Lights and to witness their music firsthand! TimeLord Michalis
