Emerging from the fertile underground of Brazil, White Canyon & the 5th Dimension – the Psych-Rock duo of Gabriela Zaith and Leo Gudan – have steadily carved out a singular path through the modern psychedelic landscape. Since their self-titled debut in 2020 (“White Canyon & The 5th Dimension”, LP/CD, 2020, Necio Records), followed by “Spectral Illusion” (LP/CD, 2021, Necio Records), the project has unfolded as a continuous exploration of sound and consciousness, further expanded through a series of more elusive releases – “Soundtrack For Astral Travel” (Cassette, 2022, Fuzzed Up & Astromoon Records), “The Mental Universe” (Lathe Cut 7”, 2022, Fuzzed Up & Astromoon Records), “Fireflies Dance” (Lathe Cut 7”, 2023, Fuzzed Up & Astromoon Records), “Gardener’s Of The Earth” (2023, Fuzzed Up & Astromoon Records), and “The Golden Key To The Kingdom Of No Return” (Cassette, 2024, Fuzzed Up & Astromoon Records). Each step has deepened their commitment to immersive sonic environments, blending echoes of late ‘60s and ‘70s experimental rock with a distinctly modern, atmospheric approach.

Operating somewhere between psychedelic rock, space rock, drone, and textural experimentation, the project constructs a universe where mysticism, occult symbolism, and cinematic sound design coexist. Layers of expansive guitars, analog-feeling synths, and dense atmospheres shape a sound that feels both ritualistic and exploratory, a passage through shifting inner and outer dimensions.

With “IV”, their fourth full-length album, White Canyon & the 5th Dimension reach a point of artistic affirmation. Rather than a break from the past, the record stands as a deepening of their evolving language, an intricate sonic architecture built on dualities: light and shadow, silence and noise, tension and release. Structured around the four elemental forces – earth, water, fire, and air – the album unfolds as a cohesive, almost ceremonial journey, signaling a new and more profound phase in the band’s ever-expanding psychedelic cosmos.

“IV” contains 8 tracks… Opening the album in a narcotic haze, “Silver Womb” is a slow-burning piece that unfolds like a haunted neo-psychedelic lullaby. Tribal percussion pulses beneath intoxicated, almost ghostly vocals, while hallucinogenic keys and lysergic textures shape a deeply immersive, mind-bending soundscape… Eastern-tinged guitar lines introduce “Gravestone Lips”, a track that fully embraces the band’s signature sonic identity. Layered with swirling patterns, tribalistic drumming, and distant fuzzy distortions, it builds toward a powerful, mind-altering middle section before dissolving into waves of dense psychedelic feedback… A slow, drifting entry point gives way to a blurred, acid-soaked dream on “Where The Dreamers Go”, the track balances noisy, almost shoegaze-like textures with a colorful haze, while the detached, free-flowing vocals create a striking contrast against its otherwise suffocating, hallucinatory atmosphere. “Flesh And Bones” is dark and subtly gothic, this mid-tempo piece channels an early ’80s aesthetic through a psychedelic lens. Ethereal female vocals float above Cure-like guitar figures—reimagined in an acid-drenched setting—resulting in a curious blend of shadowy post-punk mood and psych-pop sensitivity… “Alumia Part 1” is a brief but essential interlude, built on sampled voices and drifting ambient layers. Spacey and obscure, it sets a dark, cosmic tone while acting as a portal into the track that follows simply entitled “Alumia Part 2”. Seamlessly emerging from its predecessor, this track reintroduces the band’s core elements: tribal percussion, trippy guitars, and “stoned” vocal lines. A sudden guitar eruption propels the piece into a shimmering neo-psychedelic expanse, enriched with subtle Eastern nuances… Ritualistic and hypnotic, “River Song” is a slow-burning psych ballad that leans into repetition and mood. Female vocals guide the listener through its dark, trance-like rhythm, creating a meditative yet slightly ominous atmosphere… Beginning in a similarly shadowy tone, “Wicked Eyes” gradually transforms into a vibrant, space-bound psychedelic trip. Fuzzy, tremolo-laden guitars dominate the sonic field, turning it into a kaleidoscopic, Brazilian-flavored neo-psych closer that lingers long after its final note…

In conclusion, “IV” is a passage to be experienced – one that unfolds patiently, revealing its layers through repetition and surrender. White Canyon & the 5th Dimension do not chase immediacy; instead, they invite the listener into a carefully constructed inner world where sound becomes texture, and texture becomes vision.

Balancing darkness and illumination, structure and dissolution, the record stands as a testament to the band’s growing artistic maturity. This is a work that breathes, expands, and transforms, an introspective, almost ritualistic journey… All aboard! TimeLord Michalis
