Hailing from Rome, Neoprimitivi operate less like a conventional band and more like a fluid sonic collective. Usually performing as a multi-member ensemble, they blur the lines between psychedelia, krautrock, post-punk, no wave and avant-garde experimentation, crafting a sound that feels both chaotic and deeply intentional. Their music draws from the raw spirit of 1960s Italian beat and proto-psych, while embracing improvisation, repetition and texture in a way that often feels ritualistic rather than structured.
The name “Neoprimitivi” itself reflects their philosophy: a return to something primal, instinctive and transcendental through sound. Their compositions frequently abandon traditional song formats in favor of extended suites and evolving soundscapes—their early work already hinted at this direction with long-form pieces that unfold like sonic journeys. Equally important is their live presence, where continuous sets, immersive atmospheres and visual elements transform performances into hypnotic, almost ceremonial experiences, echoing the spirit of late-’60s psychedelic happenings.
Their discography so far traces a steady evolution: from early material like “Sul Globo d’argento” (2024, S/Sided Cassette, 42 Records) to the breakthrough debut album “Orgia Mistero” (2025, LP, 42 Records), and the darker, more cinematic follow-up “Il Sangue è Pronto” (2026, LP, 42 Records). Across these releases, Neoprimitivi prove themselves not just as revivalists of past sounds, but as explorers of a contemporary underground language – one that values atmosphere, experimentation and the transformative power of music over convention.
Here’s a few thoughts about “Il Sangue è Sronto”… Despite being structured into six tracks, the whole record operates as a single, continuous piece—a united 38-minute suite that flows without boundaries, more ritual than release, more experience than collection of songs.
It begins in a deeply dark, almost gothic atmosphere, wrapped in an immersive noise-industrial aura that lingers like a shadow throughout. Slowly, the music starts to mutate—flirting with avant-psych textures before slipping into a hazy, late-night cabaret environment, where female vocals guide the listener through a smoky, jazz-funk undercurrent. Then, without warning, the scenery shifts again: cinematic layers return, a saxophone injects an almost erotic tension, and the nocturnal mood thickens. What follows is a gradual descent into an industrialized avant-garde landscape that dissolves into something ritualistic and ceremonial—nature sounds, birds singing, chant-like voices and a mournful, funereal sax shaping a soundscape that feels cold, isolated and strangely alive.
Just as the atmosphere reaches this desolate peak, the setting transforms – suddenly we are in the middle of a sonic jungle. The sax leads the way, ceremonial vocals echo around, and an electrifying guitar break opens the gates for a brief but powerful shift into progressive rock territory. Yet Neoprimitivi never stay still for long: the band dives again into dub-inflected, funky, trippy passages, before sinking into a slow, hallucinogenic darkness. Another turn brings us back to a cinematic void – eerie noises, near-silence, avant-psych abstraction – until a female voice recites in Italian over a hypnotic, almost marching psychedelic pulse. The result is a towering, ritualistic and deeply mind-expanding finale that confirms “Il Sangue è Pronto” not just as an album, but as a transformative sonic journey, uncompromising, immersive, and utterly hypnotic… What a Trip!
