For nearly two decades, Genoa’s I Fenomeni have been among the finest custodians of European garage-beat culture, passionately reviving the spirit of the original Beat Italiano movement while keeping one foot firmly planted in the international garage-punk underground.
Their latest release, “Ritorno In Garage”, issued by Greece’s Lost In Tyme Records, is both a tribute and a celebration of the music that shaped them. Across four carefully selected covers sung entirely in Italian, the band pays homage to the raw excitement of American garage punk, the melodic brilliance of Beat Italiano, and even the obscure corners of Dutch Nederbeat. Divided between the fuzz-drenched “Lato Fuzz” and the melodic yet punchy “Lato Beat”, the EP perfectly showcases the dual nature of I Fenomeni’s sound: primitive Farfisa-driven garage mayhem on one side, passionate Mediterranean beat-pop on the other. From the explosive reworking of The Changin’ Times’ classic “How Is The Air Up There” to the melancholic brilliance of the obscure Fausto Leali gem “Io L’Ho Capito”, “Ritorno In Garage” feels like a loving reconstruction of an alternative musical universe where fuzz guitars, Vox organs and youthful angst never disappeared.
“Come Si Sta Lassù” (A1), is a fiery and respectful reworking of a long-lost garage classic, bursting with fuzzed-out energy while cleverly replacing the original harmonica hooks with an inspired Farfisa-led attack.
“Perché Sono Così” (A2), drawing from The Fabs’ legendary 1966 version, I Fenomeni deliver a vibrant and contemporary-sounding interpretation, driven by gritty fuzz guitar and infectious organ lines.
“Quando Il Cielo” (B1) is a faithful homage to a Dutch Nederbeat gem, preserving the spirit of the original while allowing the Farfisa organ to shine at the heart of the arrangement.
“Io L’Ho Capito” (B2), closing the EP on a melodic high, this beautifully executed rendition captures all the bittersweet charm of the original and proves that the spirit of Beat Italiano remains as alive as ever.
In conclusion, with “Ritorno In Garage”, I Fenomeni demonstrate their deep knowledge and genuine love for the international garage and beat underground. Nearly sixty years after the original explosion of garage and beat music, these four songs remind us that great sounds never grow old – they simply wait for the right band to bring them back to life.
