In the ever-expanding universe of European underground space rock, few bands have shown the same level of consistency, dedication and pure improvisational freedom as Germany’s Weltraum. Active since 1999, originally conceived as an open-ended improvisational project devoted entirely to psych and space rock explorations, the band has quietly built one of the most fascinating discographies in the contemporary underground scene, with no less than fourteen releases since their earliest self-released “Sonnemond” CDR back in 2007.

From their first official album “Magnolia” (2009) to the vinyl breakthrough “Sounds Of The Underground” (2011) and the numerous cosmic excursions that followed, Weltraum have remained deeply committed to spontaneous creation, embracing long-form improvisation, hypnotic repetition and the limitless spirit of classic space rock. Their current collective — featuring DNS (drums & gongs), Bozzi (modular synths & duduk), Carsten (bass), Schwong and BaalBrain (guitars), Armin (djembe), alongside Conny Maly (guitars & saz) — functions like a constantly evolving sonic organism.

Released through Clostridium Records in 2025 (September), “Th3 Sp4ce J4m S3ssions Volume 2” continues the band’s ongoing Planetary Sessions series, reportedly recorded during intense solar storms — and somehow, that cosmic turbulence seems perfectly reflected in the music itself.

“Th3 Sp4ce J4m S3ssions Volume 2” contains just 3 tracks. It opens with the monumental “Mylitta Fluctus”, beginning with an eerie almost pastoral introduction before slowly unfolding into a massive improvised space rock journey, where every instrument gradually locks into place, building a dense and deeply hypnotic sonic landscape full of heavy cosmic energy, progressive textures and increasingly powerful momentum as the track reaches its explosive finale. The shorter “Akatsuki” follows with a more futuristic and transcendental character, driven by an intense Krautrock pulse that feels like the soundtrack to a spacecraft drifting far beyond familiar galaxies, another beautifully mind-bending exercise in pure improvisational freedom. Closing the album, the twenty-minute “Vortex Veneris” fully embraces the band’s adventurous spirit, delivering a sprawling sidelong space-rock odyssey built around hypnotic repetition, shifting moods and fearless improvisation, sounding at times like an alternate-universe collision between classic 70s spacerock and the psychedelic energy of the Ozrics, resulting in a truly immersive and wonderfully heady cosmic finale…

As always with Weltraum, this is not simply an album… it is another invitation to fasten your seatbelt and surrender completely to the voyage… TimeLord Michalis
