So, let’s see what a 23-year-old band, the Land of Oz, and Ken Kesey have in common! Keith (Headman of Fruits de Mer Records) explains the situation: “The Sand Pebbles come from Australia, in fact, they first got together in 2001, when three of them were scriptwriters for ‘Neighbours’ – how Australian can you get? ‘Sometimes A Great Notion’ comes from their album ‘The Antagonist’ on Kasumuen Records (it’s their seventh album – they are something close to being legends down in Oz… “it’s time to fire up those lava lamps, project your liquid lighting onto your ceiling, whack your headphones on and melt into the abyss” – review of ‘The Antagonist’ by Back Seat Media). The track is the opener to the album – a storming start – and takes its name from the Ken Kesey novel; I happened to hear it and thought it was crying out to be on a 7″ single, fortunately, the band and their label agreed and have let me loose to help spread the word; ‘Desire Lines’ shows their more motorik side, is equally excellent and comes from their previous album, ‘Pleasure Maps’.”…

“Sometimes A Great Notion” (Side ‘A’) is a dynamic modern piece of Down Under Psych with a pompous background and a rather cool multi-shaded orchestration. “Desire Lines” is a much different track (of course, it is from a different album), a track that flirts with mid-70s Krautrock with a motorik beat, a shimmering guitar sound, lost-in-space keys, filled with huge amounts of Psych… So, first step… Grab the Single… second step, grab their albums… TimeLord Michalis
