The story here is simple. 3 members of the band Los Peyotes (from the past and the present) decided to dive a bit deeper into the mid-60s garage punkadelic period, they baptized themselves as The Psychedelic Rats and released their debut LP album “Viajando Con Las Ratas Sicodélicas” through Portuguese record label, Groovie Records and Argentinian record label, El Gato Salvaje Records. The press release states:

“Viajando con Las Ratas Sicodelicas (Groovie Records/El Gato Salvaje Records 2024)

Here is the debut album of this garage punk trio from Argentina released by Groovie Records (Portugal) and El Gato Salvaje Records (Argentina). There are 14 explosive songs where you can see the influences of 60s garage punk and 80s revival but with lyrics in Spanish. Their compositions sound like Music Machine, passing through Los Yorks (Peru) or The Cynics, but the rats dare to go a little further with their song “No te persigas” a la Velvet underground style or the raw cover of the classic “Keep on running” sung by Oscar Hechomierda (Bass), a true bizarre piece. Turn up the volume on your turntable and enjoy the insane sound of Las Ratas Sicodelicas!

About las Ratas Sicodelicas… Las Ratas Sicodelicas were born by the union of three friends who got together to break the great boredom that unleashed the 2020 pandemic. With a musical mutation where they use their long experience in garage punk to give place to the Latin American beat and psychedelia, all their songs are sung in Spanish. These psychedelic rodents are: Rolando Bruno, Oscar Hechomierda and Pablo Bam Bam, all with past and present in the Los Peyotes garage punk group from Buenos Aires Argentina. They have a 7” vinyl with 2 songs released by Groovie Records (Portugal) and an incoming LP”…

“Viajando Con Las Ratas Sicodélicas” contains 14 – seven on each side of the LP album – explosive Garage-Punky Nuggets, full of Fuzz and energy, while a few of them are “coated” with some 60s Psychedelia. Out of the 14 tracks I have spotted 4 (maybe there are more?) cover versions, presented here with lots of fresh air, respect, and inspiration! These are; “Algo De Acción”, a Spanish version of the  60s Garage classic tune “Action Woman” (originally by The Litter); “23 de Octubre”, an up-to-date version of a song from 1969 played by the band El Grupo de Gaston (1969); “Arenas” (which happen to be one of my two highlights of the album), a deeply electrified Psych version of the track (released as a Single too) “Shifting Sands” from the year 1967 and the group West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band; and the track “Cuando Vuelves”, based (or it is a Spanish language spoken version) on Spencer Davis Group’s “Keep On Running”. Other good moments inside the album are “La Isla” and “Algo Duce” two dynamites waiting to be exploded, and the Garage-Psychedelicious Groove-a-delic “Felicidad”, a track that along with “Malos Viajes” they were released as a 7” vinyl single in 2021 by Groovie Records. And then we have, the last track of the LP, the amazing, the superb, the fantastic “No Te Persigas”, which is a fine example of a Garage-Punk revival band that can be Psychedelic if they want… Yes, Las Ratas Sicodélicas went… PSYCHEDELIC… on this one… Well done boys!
