All you regular readers of TimeMaZine are aware of Spectrum Orchestrum, a 5-piece unit hailing from Lille, France. (Check here the review for their previous album “It’s About Time” from 2018). All sounds of “Noziroh” (Horizon spelled backward) are composed or improvised by Spectrum Orchestrum. The band consists of Adrien Protin (drums), Benjamin Leleu (Rhodes and transistor organ), Olivier Vibert (electric guitar), Philippe Macaire (electric bass), and William Hamlet (alto saxophone). The mood to experiment and perform Improvisational music is obvious by the very first second of the opener “Black Math Mazhar”, the band slowly unfolds an Avant Garde Progressive Free Jazz colorful mantle, sax, guitars, bass, organ, and percussion mixing together in such a splendid way so the result is a rather sophisticated Jazz-Rock improvised sounding! On the next track, “Ulysses (Sailing The Seventeen Seas)”, the Sax is leading the way through an early 70s Canterbury path, the rest are discreetly following on this long composition (12:36min), a track that blends Prog Rock with Jazz Rock, a rather adventurous composition that with its continuing changes (in rhythm and style) doesn’t leave the listener to get bored not even for a sec! Wow! “Through The Walls” and “CHerry Analog TexTurE” are jazzy experimental and deeply improvised tunes with an Avant Garde edge while on “Vaginolox” the band presents a fine mix of Art, Prog, and Jazz Rock with Canterbury touches but in a very contemporary way… The album is coming to a close with “Horizon à Rebours”, a slow dark improvisational theme that blends Contemporary Jazz with Prog Rock creating an Avant Garde-ish Neo-Proggy Jazzy soundscape… Go grab a copy of “Noziroh” and expand your Horizons… TimeLord Michalis
