Jupiter Fungus is a studio duo hailing from Piraeus, Greece, consisting of Ares Papatriantafillou (ex-Father Sun) on keyboards and vocals and Fotis Xenikoudakis (ex-Father Sun, The Telestons) on flute. “Garden Electric” is their debut album released through Greek label Sound Effect Records, the press release states:
“Sound Effect Records, presents “Garden Electric”, the debut album by Greece’s best-kept prog-rock secret, Jupiter Fungus! Essentially a duo, with the aid of select studio musicians, Jupiter Fungus combine captivating themes with meticulous arrangements and passionate performances, not unlike their heroes. Their holistic approach, incl. their breathtaking artwork, adds to the legacy of “Garden Electric”, making for one of the best new albums of the genre”…
The musicians that participate in “Garden Electric” are Ares Papatriantafillou (Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar on Ear Intro), Fotis Xenikoudakis (Flute, Tin Whistle), George Papageorgiou (Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Glockenspiel), George Emmanuel (Electric Guitar), and Nick Vell (Drums). Music by Ares Papatriantafillou & Fotis Xenikoudakis and lyrics by Ares Papatriantafillou (except “Thoughts of Revenge” by Konstantinos Vrettos). “Garden Electric” contains 4 tracks equally divided on the 2 sides of the LP album. A solid steady rhythm section sets the whole base for the opener “Underdog” showing by the very start the desired “direction” of the band which is nothing else than the glorious early 70s Canterbury scene! (at least at this first track) Progressive Rock blends with Canterbury Rock under a huge Vertigo (yes, the label of course) cloak! This unbelievable Prog Puzzle is being completed by explosive keys, narrative “effected” vocals and mesmerizing guitars! “Circles” is a 4-part instrumental suite consisting of “Theros/Metoporon/Chimon/Ear” and this time the Flute sets the scene, moving the band deeper into the magnificent Prog 70s era, blending Classic Rock and Progressive Rock, adding a pinch of Jazz Rock and a big spoon of early 70s Jethro Tull (Thick As A Brick period)… Side ‘B’ opens with “Past Ground”, under a grounded bucolic start and an eerie mysterious flute-based background, the band slowly transforms the scenery into a jazzy Canterbury-inspired Progressive theme, a bit improvisational, before they all together start this floating Trip into Space-Prog, so cool! An enchanted soft Proggy soundscape unfolds on the last track of the album “Thoughts Of Revenge”, it’s a track with male vocals that slowly moves into more Heavy Prog paths with all these Classic Rock and Space Rock influences that accompany the band since the beginning of this album… Personally, I consider “Garden Electric” as one of the best albums of 2025, it’s out there for all of you to grab, while I patiently wait for Jupiter Fungus next move… In Prog we trust… TimeLord Michalis
