Few contemporary artists manage to capture the mysterious romance of analogue communication as vividly as Portugal’s ACID ACID. With their third full-length album, “The Radio Under The Stars”, Tiago Castro and his collaborators transform the invisible world of radio waves into a deeply immersive instrumental psych experience. Rather than simply celebrating broadcasting technology, this conceptual work pays tribute to the emotional bond between transmitter and listener, where sound becomes memory, imagination, and human connection. Built upon hypnotic psychedelic textures, kosmische atmospheres, and meditative drone passages, the album also embraces a richer melodic identity and more adventurous arrangements, resulting in what may be ACID ACID’s most cinematic and emotionally engaging work to date.
Founded by Portuguese multi-instrumentalist Tiago Castro, ACID ACID has steadily developed a distinctive instrumental sound that merges psychedelic rock, kosmische music, ambient drones, and experimental improvisation. Studio perfectionism meets an organic analogue aesthetic, creating immersive sonic landscapes that owe as much to the German cosmic pioneers as they do to modern psychedelic explorers. For “The Radio Under The Stars”, Castro is joined by Helena Fagundes (drums) and André Hencleeday (Hammond organ, synthesizers, trumpet and percussion), while longtime collaborator Rui Antunes once again handles production and sound design.
“The Radio Under The Stars” is a long composition divided into 2 parts, each on one side of the vinyl LP. The opening side, “The Radio Under The Stars – Part I”, slowly tunes itself to an invisible cosmic frequency, beginning with towering walls of drone before dissolving into a mesmerising landscape of floating keyboards, analogue echoes and celestial ambience. ACID ACID patiently builds an ever-evolving sonic narrative where kosmische meditation, gentle psychedelic passages and abstract electronic textures coexist in perfect harmony. As the journey unfolds, the music abandons earthly coordinates altogether, drifting through nebulas of sound that recall the exploratory spirit of the great cosmic travellers of the seventies, until it vanishes into the infinite, leaving only silence and expectation behind…
The second chapter “The Radio Under The Stars – Part II” feels like intercepting transmissions from a forgotten corner of the universe. Pulsating electronic signals, weightless ambient atmospheres, and hypnotic Space Rock motifs merge into an immersive cinematic experience, balancing serenity with quiet tension. At times, the music evokes the unsettling calm of 2001: A Space Odyssey, as if HAL 9000 were gently selecting these floating cosmic soundscapes to comfort Dave Bowman during his solitary voyage through the infinite void. The analogue warmth never disappears, even as mysterious frequencies suddenly interrupt the illusion, giving way to futuristic Space Rock before dissolving once again into bizarre electronic transmissions. It is a fitting conclusion to this conceptual journey, where radio becomes far more than a means of communication—it transforms into a portal leading towards distant galaxies and hidden emotions…
In conclusion, “The Radio Under The Stars” is not just an album, but a conceptual journey through the mystery, nostalgia and magic of radio itself. With its cosmic atmospheres, analogue warmth and cinematic imagination, ACID ACID have created a work that feels timeless – an album that could easily find its place in the collection of any psych traveller, standing proudly next to visionary works such as Kraftwerk’s “Radio-Activity”. A beautiful tribute to the invisible waves that connect us all, somewhere between Earth, memory and the infinite universe… TimeLord Michalis
