Berlin, summer 2023. Somewhere between garage fuzz, krautrock repetition and the darker corners of psychedelic rock, Sacred Buzz started building their own little sonic universe. I first came across the band in 2024, when their debut 7-inch “Radio Radiation / Rebel Machine” landed on my turntable, and those two tracks were enough to make me keep an ear open for whatever would come next. “Radio Radiation” had that haunted, garage-psych character I immediately dug, while “Rebel Machine” pushed the fuzz, reverb and raw energy into a faster, more punkish direction. It was a small record, but it clearly suggested that there was more to come.

Two years later, Sacred Buzz return with their self-titled debut LP, expanding that initial attack into eight tracks and roughly 42 minutes of psychedelic exploration. The Berlin quartet — Ivan Skvortsov on guitar and vocals, Jane Skvortsova on keys, Luca Büttner on bass and Max Storck on drums — now opens the doors much wider, letting post-punk moods, hypnotic krautrock grooves, garage attitude and heavy psychedelic passages coexist inside the same strange, cinematic landscape. The locked-in rhythm section keeps the body moving, while fuzzed guitars, echoing vocals and droning organ textures build a more surreal atmosphere around it.

The band’s lyrical world travels through science-fiction ideas, questions about reality and philosophical imagery, but Sacred Buzz never forget that psychedelia should also have a physical pulse. Recorded at Monoton Studio in Berlin by Fabien de Menou, with additional colours from flute (Andrea Mirabella) and congas (Mauro Retamales), the album sounds like a journey where the borders between genres gradually dissolve. And perhaps this is the most interesting thing about Sacred Buzz: they don’t seem interested in choosing between the garage, the kraut, the post-punk and the psych-rock sides of their personality. They throw them all into the same bubbling cauldron and let the trip decide where it goes…

“Sacred Buzz” is released through Greek label Sound Effect Records. Let’s have a closer look/listen to the 8 tracks of the LP album. “Hivemind” opens the LP with a groovy fuzzy beat and a futuristic, krauty theme played on the organ, while a delicate reverberated electric guitar floats around the rhythm section. There is an enormous, super-delic 80s post-rock attitude running through the whole thing, but the psychedelic heart is always beating underneath, turning the track into a highly rhythmical Psych-Rock anthem. A perfect album opener indeed, because once it fades away you cannot help wondering what kind of trip Sacred Buzz are preparing for the next stop. “Blight Town” slows things down a little, replacing the speed of the opener with a low-beating, lysergic rhythm, but keeping the fuzz firmly switched on. It develops into a hypnotically fuzz-a-delic piece with a fantastic cinematic feeling, the kind of track that could easily become the soundtrack to some dark, disturbing movie — perhaps even a Zombie one! Psych-Zombie-Rock? Why not! “Nothing To Hide” brings an intense, dark 80s post-rock atmosphere, with the band unfolding a krauty psychedelic cloak that seems to cover everything in sight, while a rather punky attitude gives the whole thing an extra kick. The phasing, fuzzy guitar sound is all over the place, adding another layer of distortion to this already shadowy psychedelic landscape. “Down And Out” takes a very different road, beginning with a reverberated electric guitar before slowly opening into a magical and hypnotic piece of slow-moving neo-psychedelia. There is something beautifully familiar here, reminding me of some of those 80s revivalists who looked back towards the psychedelic language of the 60s, with Spacemen 3 naturally coming to mind.

“Simulation” suddenly injects the journey with a remarkable futuristic, spacey keyboard theme, repeated almost like a transmission coming from some distant planet. The electric guitar fills every available gap with the necessary psychedelic riffs, and the combination produces a groove-a-delic Psych anthem that manages to be both hypnotic and immediately engaging. “Glow” begins in a much creepier manner, with a haunted slow organ and a wonderfully creep-a-delic bass line setting the scene. Gradually, the track becomes more and more lysergically torturous, twisting itself into a trippy psychedelic anthem where the atmosphere seems to grow heavier with every passing minute. “Lost Highway” takes us straight into Kraut territory with a fantastic space-a-delic theme, and somehow I can imagine a slowed-down “Silver Machine” disappearing into the distance with a few Psychedelic Warlords as its crew — Disappearing In Smoke (got it?)! This is an unbelievable collision of Kraut, Space and Psychedelia, launched far beyond the stratosphere and heading upwards, towards the skies. And then comes “Trapped Inside The Dream”, the longest journey here, opening with a dreamy, spacey, heavily effected atmosphere before settling into a slow tempo. Hazy, blurry neo-psychedelia gradually becomes drenched in Space-Rock, creating a dream-a-delic scenery where everything seems suspended somewhere between consciousness and outer space. It is a fitting final trip for an album that spends its entire journey bending reality, dissolving borders and inviting the listener deeper into the surreal universe of Sacred Buzz.

From the very first beat of “Hivemind” to the dreamy drift of “Trapped Inside The Dream”, Sacred Buzz build a world that is simultaneously danceable, dark, cosmic and unmistakably psychedelic. A very interesting debut from a band that has clearly just opened the door — and personally, I’m curious to see where their next journey will take them… Do I need to mention that “Sacred Buzz” is one of the Best albums of 2026?
