From the sprawling sonic underground of Mexico City emerges Rostro del Sol, a collective formed in 2018 by guitarist Mitch Bálänt. Blending blues, heavy psych, jazz, progressive rock and flashes of funk into a vivid musical collage inspired by the golden eras of the late ’60s and ’70s, the band quickly caught international attention with their debut album in 2021, followed by the exploratory Blue Storm EP two years later.

Now the six-piece return with their second full-length work, “Universo 25”, released digitally and on CD on January 29, 2026, with a limited vinyl edition expected through Echodelic Records and Clostridium Records. Conceived as a conceptual journey, “Universo 25” unfolds like a psychedelic narrative inspired by real scientific experiments, weaving symphonic prog passages, jazzy improvisations, and heavy psych textures into a cosmic story where sound, imagination, and symbolism collide.

“Universo 25” is a concept album, contains 10 tracks, and tells the story of Universo 25, though there are no lyrics at all! The self-titled “Universo 25” opens the album with a majestic piece of old-school progressive rock, immediately setting the conceptual tone of “Universo 25”. The atmosphere feels like a meeting point between the symphonic elegance of Camel’s classic era (“Lady Fantasy” comes instantly to mind) and the grandiose approach of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, evoking the spirit of “Pictures at an Exhibition” while unfolding into its own cosmic narrative… In just 105 seconds, Rostro del Sol manages to dive straight into the British mid-’70s progressive rock tradition with “Predicator”. Classical and symphonic influences dominate, proving that even within such a short runtime the band can construct something powerful, dense and musically impressive… “Bicephalus” is a true progressive roller coaster led initially by an expressive saxophone line. As the piece evolves, the instruments seem to spiral toward a shared ecstatic climax, navigating multiple time signature changes. The melting electric guitar tone gradually turns the track heavy enough to recall the power of Uriah Heep, before the keyboards take control and guide the composition into free-form avant-prog territories… Opening with a marching rhythm, “Atomic Ark” is a track that once again hints at the melodic aura of Camel’s symphonic prog approach before transforming into something far more explosive. Soon it feels like an ELP-style rocket blasting into the prog stratosphere – or perhaps an early ’70s jazz-prog missile launched by Soft Machine. Either way, the result is mind-expanding! An eerie and mysterious introduction draws the listener into a darker sonic environment with “Beyond And The Smoke”. Slow, trippy progressive textures unfold gradually, giving space to improvisational passages with a subtle jazzy edge that deepen the album’s atmospheric dimension… “Collapse” dives straight into the Canterbury-style progressive tradition. A shimmering electric guitar and demonic keyboards create a dramatic contrast – like a thunderstorm suddenly erupting under a clear sky. With discreet saxophone touches adding a symphonic flavor, the track stands as a fine example of classic progressive rock craftsmanship… Burning keyboards and a melodic, “dripping” electric guitar build a powerful heavy-prog landscape clearly inspired by the classic sounds associated with Vertigo Records on “Paragon”. Midway through, the music slips into a tribalistic acoustic interlude before darker keyboard sequences slowly take over, propelling the composition into a vast space-prog atmosphere… “Isolated Head” is a slow and sentimental moment within the album’s natural flow. Dominated by expressive electric guitar lines, the piece unfolds like a melancholic ballad. A delicate solo melts the atmosphere before the keyboards gently steer the music back into the progressive universe. On “Mother Of The Illusion” the band embraces a heavier and more futuristic progressive sound, almost cinematic in scope. The track feels like the soundtrack to an imaginary sci-fi battle (maybe the one that Eloi are fighting Morlocks) with epic textures and dramatic intensity pushing the listener’s imagination into wild cosmic scenarios. The closing “Argonne” returns to pure old-school progressive rock energy. Fast and dynamic at first, it showcases the band’s tight musical interplay before slowing down into a reflective section that almost feels like an acoustic, sit-back reinterpretation of a lost space-rock anthem by Hawkwind. A fitting finale that highlights the musicianship and deep knowledge of the genre’s golden past…

In conclusion, “Universo 25” proves to be far more than a simple progressive rock record. Through its conceptual, vivid instrumentation and fearless musical ambition, Rostro del Sol builds a sonic universe where the spirit of classic ’70s prog meets a fresh, imaginative vision. Drawing inspiration from the great traditions of the genre while adding their own adventurous touch, the band delivers an album that feels both nostalgic and strikingly alive. And yet, looking at some photos of the band, it becomes genuinely difficult to believe that such mature, deeply knowledgeable musicianship comes from artists of such a young age. Their understanding of the progressive rock tradition—and their ability to channel it with confidence and creativity—is nothing short of remarkable! For listeners who still believe that Progressive Rock is meant to expand the mind and ignite the imagination, “Universo 25” is a journey well worth taking.
