THE NIGHT TIMES – Watch Your Step / I Got My Mind On You 2019 (7” State Records)

A surprising 7-inch release that I can only describe it as a “Divine” gift! State Records throws in the market a stunning “killer” 7incher with 2 tracks ready to melt your brains, by a new band hailing from California, L.A. called The Night Times. A band that recently managed to successfully “Invade” the UK! State Records’ press release reads:

“Having recently taken the UL by storm with a series of astounding live appearances, LA teen garage sensations The Night Times follow up their debut 45 and LP (both issued by Outro Records) with 2 new songs, exclusively recorded at State’s custom-built North Down Sound 8-track recording facility. Luckily, the band had a few days off in amongst those English dates, so made the wise decision to hit the studio and lay down these 2 ACE new titles in glorious MONO! And WHAT a result! “Watch Your Step” combines a relentless surf-y rhythm with jangly guitar and raw vocals from Chris and Magoo, and dig that scream as the solo kicks in! Add in reedy keyboards and haunted backing vocals and we have a glorious A-side! Over on the flip, the beat side of the band comes shining through with “I Got My Mind On You”; a killer R & B bass line drives things along, with not one, not two but THREE solos kicking in, all beautifully underpinned with some party-time hand claps! Squints takes the first 2 solos clean, while Magoo puts his fuzzbox to good use on that closing beastie, before the whole track wraps up in 6/8 time for a killer close! So, the ‘A’ side, occupies “Watch Your Step”, amazing 60’s Garage drenched with acid-fuzz, presented in a triumphant MONO style! A Mind-Blowing monstrous Garage-O-Surf-A-Delic tune with a guitar solo sufficient enough to raise you from your prolonged musical lethargy! On the other hand/side, “I Got My Mind On You” is a first-class admirable Shake-a-Delic R n’ B dynamite, reminding the last “innocent” days of The Beatles or the first “dirty” days of The Pretty Things!
